SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Two fuzzy little meerkat pups made their first public appearance at San Jose's Happy Hollow Park & Zoo, having recently become the sixth and seventh meerkat residents at the park.
Born on Oct. 13, the pups have been hiding in the family den until recently making an appearance, according to Happy Hollow.
"These animals are very popular with our visitors. They are always busy foraging, basking in the sun and grooming," said Valerie Riegel, zoo curator. "I think what fascinates many folks is the idea of a guard, the one member of the mob that acts as a sentinel, keeping watch for predators and alerting the group in case of danger."
Park and zoo spokeswoman Vanessa Rogier told NBC11 that on colder, cloudy days the meerkats tend to stay in their burrows more often.
The social little African member of the mongoose family has enjoyed recent celebrity having been featured in the recent television show "Meerkat Manor" and for being the inspiration for the popular Disney character Timone from the animated film "The Lion King."
The best time to drop by the meerkat family for a good look at their antics is when the park opens at 10 a.m.
Happy Hollow Park & Zoo is located at 1300 Senter Road in San Jose and open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except holidays.
For more information, call the park and zoo at (408) 277-3000.
